Find the right starting route

Graphic design programs can emphasize visual communication, production, web design, or interactive work. Santa Monica College describes research, concepts, prototyping, and implementation across visual media; Valencia offers a Graphic and Interactive Design Associate in Science. Those descriptions point to the same practical choice: decide what kind of work you want to show in a portfolio, then inspect the courses and projects that will help you make it. An associate degree, a focused certificate, and a transfer plan may have different general education and major requirements. Ask to see the actual sequence, studio access, and examples of assessed work.

The table includes distinct qualifications and related pathways, not interchangeable courses. College locations identify the institution, not a confirmed teaching campus. Confirm current intake, international admission and F-1 program eligibility directly with the college.

Learn the design process

Software matters, but a design program should teach more than button sequences. Santa Monica College frames graphic design around researching a communication problem, developing a concept, prototyping, and implementing it. Ask how students receive critique and revise work. Look for typography, layout, visual systems, and design for different media in the current course list. If you already have drawings or digital pieces, ask whether a portfolio is needed for admission, placement, or later transfer. The answer may be different for each stage.

Choose a portfolio direction

A student interested in brand identity may need different projects from one drawn to web interfaces or production design. Santa Monica College lists graphic design, user experience, and web design awards; Valencia uses an interactive design title. Compare required projects instead of assuming that similar names produce similar portfolios. Ask what final work students present, whether they can document process as well as finished images, and how group work is credited. A portfolio built during study is a useful way to judge whether the program fits your intended direction.

Check the credential route

Santa Monica College lists both an associate degree and a certificate in graphic design, while Valencia's named route is an applied Associate in Science. If you hope to continue to a bachelor's program, ask which credits and portfolio requirements a specific receiving institution accepts. If a shorter credential is the priority, ask whether its courses can later count toward the degree. Confirm equipment, software access, printing or production facilities, and any material requirements directly with the department. International applicants should also confirm the precise award's enrollment eligibility with the college.

Questions to ask before you apply

  • What portfolio pieces and process documentation will I finish in this award?
  • How do graphic design, web design, and interactive design options differ in required courses?
  • Which credits and portfolio requirements does my intended bachelor's program accept?
